The Israelites are preparing to leave behind the wilderness and cross over into the land of promise. To settle there requires a level of independence they had not known in Egypt and a level of self-sufficiency they had not shown in their wandering. They must release themselves from a dependence on an Other and embrace their capacity to sustain and govern themselves. This week’s Torah portion describes a dramatic ritual for the Israelites to affirm their power of self-determination.
