PARSHAT MATOT-MASEI 5781 NEGOTIATION: HOW TO CROSS THE DIVIDE

The Israelites learn how to differentiate between someone’s position and their interests. Focusing on one of them makes compromises difficult, while being aware of the other holds out the possibility of crossing a divide. View the study sheet here. Watch the recording here.

Last week we witnessed the daughters of Zelophehad address the community leadership about an injustice. The way they did so restored procreative speech to the community. This week two of the tribes further develop that revived civic discourse by negotiating with Moses about their role in settling the Israelites in the land of promise.

Embedded in the text are lessons about how to differentiate between someone’s position and their interests. Focusing on one of them makes compromises difficult, while being aware of the other holds out the possibility of crossing a divide. Join us here at 7:00 p.m. (PDT) Thursday July 8 as we explore negotiation and how to cross the divide.
