The Book of Deuteronomy is the recitation of a nation’s story and its moral standards. The Israelites are being told this story not because it is over but because they will be expected to continue it. Their successful settling of the land of promise is conditioned on honoring a pledge, a moral bond, an ethical undertaking.

To ritualize their affirmation of accountability to that pledge, the Israelites are to offer up “first fruits” of the land of promise. With that ritual each citizen recalls the venture that brought them to the present moment and their own obligation to contribute to its next chapters.

Join us here at 7:00 p.m. (PDT) Thursday August 26 as we explore first fruits for a nation.
